Transportation

Ruth Griffin BridgeThe New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NH DOT) has invested approximately $278 million in the upgrade of the Spaulding Turnpike over a 10 year period. The construction project includes new exits for Gosling Road, Woodbury Avenue and Nimble Hill Road and significantly increased the capacity of the Ruth Griffin Bridge (formerly the Little Bay Bridges). Through its local planning process, the Town has limited access points along Woodbury Avenue in order to provide truck traffic with a convenient and comfortable route into Town’s industrial and waterfront area. The Town’s acceptance of Wilcox Way as a Town Road is a continuation of the Planning Board’s work to develop Shattuck Way as an industrial corridor roadway. The existing development along Shattuck Way provides over 35% of the Town’s tax base. The continuation of Wilcox Way to Gosling Road will allow for the future development of industrial land. The NH DOT has included Shattuck Way in the list of Critical Urban Freight Corridor (CUFC) segments for consideration in the Statewide Freight Plan. If designated as a CUFC, the corridor would be eligible to utilize National Highway Freight Program funds to construct improvements. Waterfront industrial companies can utilize rail service if they wish. These federal, state and local investments in transportation encourage high quality industrial development that foster’s Newington’s role as a regional employment center, providing high quality and high paying jobs.
