Louis deRochemont Homestead

|
The homestead of Hollywood film director Louis deRochemont (1899-1978) recently moved several hundred feet south. Tyco, the building's owner from 1978 thru 2006, proposed a land subdivision which would have assured the destruction of the building were it to remain on-site, this despite the State's determination that the building qualifies for the National Register of Historic Places. Tyco asserted that they were under pressure to liquidate certain assets in order to hasten their financial recovery from the excesses of the Kozlowski era. Real estate developer Greg Kirsch volunteered to move the house to the corner of Piscataqua and Shattuck. His efforts in this regard were supported by the Newington Historic District Commission. Kirsch subsequently sold the building to a local health care provider. Mr. Kirsch recently completed office condominiums across the street at 101-129 Shattuck Way.
Louis deRochemont was a pioneering and prolific film maker. His work has a worldwide following. Several of his films were shot here in the Seacoast. The Historic District Commission are exploring the possibility of holding a Louis deRochemont film festival.
