The fourth annual Fox Point Sunset 5 Mile Road Race was the biggest yet! An astonishing field of 188 runners took to the roads of Newington on a newly designed course. It took place Saturday, September 10, 2005 , which was a beautiful late summer day. The day was comfortable for volunteers and spectators, and a bit hot for runners. Most of the last 2 miles of the course were uphill, and more than one runner commented in appreciation of the difficulty. In a change from previous years, the race started and ended at the Old Town Hall . Many out of town runners and supporters were treated to a first look at the historic town center. Much thanks to our Premier Sponsor Newington Wal-Mart for their continued support!
The overall winner was Tim Perry of Bethel , CT , with a time of 24:52. The first woman finisher was Staci Prinz of Rye , with a time of 30:30. The first Newington resident to finish was Catherine Graciano, with a time of 32:46. Catherine had just arrived back in town on Friday after hiking the entire Appalacian Trail. She ran the race in her fourth pair of trail shoes, which were missing a chunk of the heel due to a close encounter with a campfire. This year, the first male finisher from Newington was again a youngster. Zachary Taylor, age 14, finished in a time of 36:59. Zachary is a currently running cross country as a Freshman at Portsmouth High School and is new to the road racing circuit. The third Newington Finisher was Christina Dufton with a time of 38:25. Christina just began running this year and this was her first road race!
